About the
EcoPhotography Team
Jerry and Marcy Monkman
 |
For us, EcoPhotography is about creating images that
uniquely depict nature, environmental issues, and people in the outdoors.
For more than ten years we have spent much of our time exploring the wild places of
New England and beyond, capturing the essence of these special places with
words and photographs. We hope that our work will in some way deepen people's appreciation for the wild
places in this world and inspire them to help protect those places that are in trouble.
While we grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, we both felt an
affinity for New England, where both of our families have roots. We moved
to the Boston area soon after graduating from the University of Illinois,
and ten years ago we moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where we live
with our daughter Acadia and our son Quinn. We complete several
assignments a year for environmental groups such as the Trust for Public
Land, Manomet Observatory, and the Nature Conservancy. In 2001, we
photographed the Lamprey River in four seasons for the Lamprey River
Advisory Council who funded the project with a grant from the Greater
Piscataqua Community Foundation. In November, 2002, we were awarded a
communications award by the Northern Forest Alliance in recognition of their
“vision and excellence in chronicling the story of the Northern Forest
through photography.” |

Our newest books, White
Mountain Wilderness, and Wild Acadia (published by the University Press of New England)
explore the history of wilderness in the northeast's most rugged landscapes
through photography and short essays. Our first photography book,
"The Colors of Fall,"
was published in 2003 by The Countryman Press. We have written three adventure travel
guides to some of New England's wildest places. These
guides explore the best hiking,
biking, and paddling in New Hampshire and Acadia National Park. They are published by AMC Books
and distributed by Globe
Pequot Press.
Jerry has also been teaching photo workshops
in Maine and New Hampshire since 2002.
We can be reached at P.O. Box 424, Portsmouth, NH 03802, (603)457-6798 (M-F, 9a.m.
to 5 p.m. EST).
We are also represented by the stock agencies Animals
Animals/Earth Scenes, and the
Danita Delimont Agency and IPNStock.com.
